Alene Taber, shareholder, was a speaker at this year's California Water Law & Policy Conference on "The Implications of the QSA Ruling on Colorado River Water Supplies." The QSA or Quantification Settlement Agreement involves the nation's largest agriculture-to-urban water transfer that was recently invalidated by the Sacramento Superior Court. Craig Beam of the Firm's Real Estate Practice Group was a featured speaker at the Los Angeles Chapter of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors' (SIOR) February Business Luncheon. The topic for the meeting was: Understanding New County Water Rules and the effects it will have on Commercial Real Estate. Mr. Beam's presentation included a summary of how the newly approved Storm Water discharge regulations ("MS-4 Permit") issued by the Regional Water Quality Control Board for Los Angeles will affect real estate financing, development and permitting in Ventura County and the status of similar pending permits in Orange and Los Angeles County.

Craig Beam of the Firm's Land Use Practice Group was a featured panelist at the Ventura Stormwater (MS4) Seminar: Implementation and Compliance with Land Development & Construction Requirements. The seminar was held on December 8, 2009 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 450 Harbor Blvd, Ventura, CA from 7:30am to 3pm. This interactive seminar, hosted by the Building Industry Association, The Associated General Contractors, and the Ventura County Chapter of the American Public Works Association, focused on the land use planning and construction elements of the new Ventura County Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit. The MS4 permit regulates how stormwater must be managed by new development and redevelopment, including all residential, commercial, industrial, and retail development and renovations over 10,000 square feet. The regulations will also apply to parking and street repairs and public work projects.

Alene Taber, a member of the Firm's Land Use/Environmental Law Practice Group, participated in the Green California Community College Summit on October 5-7, 2009 at the Pasadena Convention Center. Ms. Taber's presentation, "Climate Change Legislation and Community Colleges" took place on October 7, 2009 from 3:15 pm to 4:30 pm. The presentation provided an overview of climate change legislation and its effect on community colleges. The session also detailed where those affected can go for possible funding opportunities to off-set the costs of these programs. Craig Beam of the Firm's Land Use Department was a featured panelist at "Lead, Follow or Get Out of the Way: Housing Leadership in a Changing World," the 8th Annual Ventura Housing Conference. The panel entitled, "AB32 (CA Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006)/SB375 (Development of sustainable community strategies by cities and counties to reduce back green house gas emissions from cars and light trucks)/MS4 (Municipal Storm Water Discharge Permit) Not a Secret Code: New Laws Changing the Housing Industry" discussed current housing trends and analyze what effect changes in recent legislation will have on these trends.

The goal of this year's conference is to focus on the best examples of successful leadership in the housing industry, and ways that individuals can use effective leadership skills to tackle tough issues facing the housing market today. The Conference, which attracts over 250 attendees including many Ventura County elected officials, took place Wednesday, September 30, 2009, from 7:00 am to 12:30 pm, at the Ventura County Office of Education Conference Center, 5100 Adolfo Road in Camarillo. Craig Beam of JDTP's Westlake Village Office conducted a seminar sponsored by "HOME", a nonprofit affordable housing advocate group that was attended by public officials, developers, housing advocates and others interested in how Senate Bill 375 the "Steinberg Legislation" may affect the development and location of housing. The Steinberg Legislation comprises one of the strategies designed to reduce the emission of Green House Gases, which was adopted last year as was the "Scoping Plan" of the California Air Resources Board in response to the mandate of the "Global Warming Solutions Act", AB 32. The topics discussed included how the legislation may affect the pattern and density of residential development and related to transportation corridors and the role and responsibilities of the several different types of governmental agencies responsible for the SB 375 program's development, including Metropolitan Planning Organizations, Regional Transportation Commissions, Councils of Government and Cities and Counties.

Alene Taber spoke on "Legal Considerations of Making or Not Making Findings" at the UCLA Extension Public Policy Program's "Planning Commissioners Training" seminar on March 6, 2008, in Los Angeles. "A fruitful and often easy target for litigation by project opponents is the findings, or lack there of, made by a city or county to support its planning or environmental review decisions," notes Taber. Her presentation, which will began at 10:45 a.m., addressed common pitfalls cities and counties make, and how to make findings more bulletproof. Michele Staples was a guest speaker at the Western Water Law SuperConference in Las Vegas on September 17-18, 2007. Her panel was entitled: "The Relationship Between Water Supply and Land Use Planning, Vineyard Area Citizens for Responsible Growth" and addressed the recent California Supreme Court case on proving up adequate water supplies for land use approvals.

May 17, 2007 Glenn A. Fuller participated as a speaker in the educational seminar entitled "Tax Considerations In Real Estate Transactions", which was held at the Sheraton Pasadena Hotel. The seminar reviewed the latest developments and planning considerations for complex real estate transactions. Participants learned about properly structured tax-deferred exchanges; how to withdraw money, tax-free, from newly formed partnerships/LLC's; tax aspects of tax-free industrial revenue and development bonds; tax aspects of international real estate investing, by foreigners in the U.S. and offshore by U.S. residents; and California property tax planning.
November 8-9, 2006 JDTP's Orange County and Westlake Village locations each hosted a 2007 Employment Law seminar, which focused on new employment laws and regulations that took effect January 1, 2007. The seminar also addressed the significant rise in wage and hour lawsuits and class actions, and how best to avoid them.

Michael Alti is one of the founding members of the Orange County Chapter of the Network of Arab American Professionals. They hosted their first event, "Meet the Professionals" on January 21 at Meadowlark Golf Club in Huntington Beach.

The event included Aron Kader, a professional comedian who has appeared at all the hot LA spots and on TV. There were three speakers on professional issues, including Mr. Alti. He spoke on matters relating to administrative/municipal law and project entitlements.
